Umbral Engrams are a new addition in the Season of Arrivals. Umbral engrams are different from other engrams available in the game, you have to decode them using the Umbral Decoder. These are different because you can adjust the loot using the Prismatic Recaster.

How To Get Umbral Engrams
The engrams are dropping from different sources, the sources are:
You will get your first engram after completing “Contact” Public event located on IO. This is part of the quest which is given to you by drifter.
World Drops – Similar to normal engrams, these can drop from powerful enemies, strike, completion of bounties, Nightfalls, and Crucible matches.
Season Pass – Your season pass has a fixed number of Umbral Engrams that you’ll get upon levelling up. Free users will get one at level 7 and pass owners will get two; one at Level 7 and another at Level 52.
Prismatic Recaster – Every time you level up the Recaster, you will get an Umbral Engram. The Recaster can be levelled up using Twisted Energy.
One thing that we know for sure is that these are rarer compared to the normal engrams.
How To Decode Umbral Engrams
Once you get an engram, it has to be decoded using the Umbral Decoder. This is a device that you’ll find next to Drifter in The Annex at the Tower. You can only access it after completing the public event on IO.
