The short answer
Warframe runs on the Evolution Engine, a proprietary engine made by Digital Extremes. It first shipped with Dark Sector in 2008. Since December 2023 the only renderer is the Enhanced Graphics Renderer, and on PC you choose DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 in the launcher.

What it means for you on PC
- In the launcher, click the gear icon and pick DirectX 11 or DirectX 12. Both run the Enhanced renderer.
- Ignore any guide that tells you to switch to the Classic renderer. It was retired in December 2023.
- Ignore advice about Window Scaling Mode and Blur Reflections. Both options were removed with Classic.
- DirectX 12 is still being tuned. Update 42 (March 2026) reworked its shader cache and memory use.
- For a lag or FPS problem, start with the launcher cache repair, then the DirectX switch.
Cross-play and cross-save
- Cross-play works between all current platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, iOS and Android.
- Cross-save rolled out in waves from December 2023 and was open to everyone by January 2024.
- You link each platform account to a PC Warframe account, one at a time.
Tips that save runs
- The same engine powers Soulframe, Digital Extremes' other live game.
- Enhanced became the PC default with The Duviri Paradox. PC was the last platform to drop Classic, at Update 35.
Mistakes that waste runs
- Saying Warframe uses Unreal or Unity. It uses Digital Extremes' own engine.
- Expecting cross-save to happen by itself. You have to link accounts.
