Coming Back to Warframe in 2026: What Changed and What to Do First
By years away: what changed, what to do first
Last Updated on September 11, 2026
The short answer
Your gear is fine; your knowledge is not. Resume the quest line from wherever you stopped and push to The New War, because nearly everything added since 2022 sits behind it. Then The Duviri Paradox for the Circuit and Incarnons, Veilbreaker for Archon Shards, and Whispers in the Walls into The Hex for 1999. Self-damage is gone, pets cannot die, Sorties are no longer the endgame, and old mod math is wrong.
Reviewed September 10, 2026, current through Update 43.5. Iceblade of Narin lands September 23 and is not reflected yet; this page is re-checked after every major patch.
| You left in | Biggest changes | Do first |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 to 2025 | Warframe: 1999 and Hollvania, Technocyte Coda, Temporal Archimedea, The Teacher quest, Uriel, Follie, Jade Shadows: Constellations | Clear Nightwave, run The Teacher, play the 2025 and 2026 quests in order |
| 2022 to 2023 | Duviri and the Circuit, Whispers in the Walls, Dante and Netracells, the 2024 health and status rework, the companion rework, 1999 | Finish The Duviri Paradox, re-mod companions, relearn armor and status |
| 2020 to 2021 | The New War, Zariman, Veilbreaker and Archon Shards, plus everything above | Push to The New War, unlock the Helminth shard segment, do Archon Hunts weekly |
| 2019 or earlier | Self-damage removed, Nightwave replaced alerts, Railjack, Necramechs, Helminth, and every story arc after The War Within | Replay the story chain, ignore your old builds, watch one 2026 tour video |
The systems you missed
- Helminth: feed a frame, give its ability to another. Most builds run a subsumed ability now.
- Archon Shards: five permanent stat sockets per frame from Veilbreaker; Tauforged shards are the weekly chase.
- Incarnon weapons and the Circuit: old weapons get an evolving Void form from adapters farmed weekly in Duviri.
- Whispers in the Walls, Netracells and Deep Archimedea: the weekly endgame that replaced Sorties as the loot source.
- Warframe: 1999 and Hollvania: the Hex, Protoframes, Technocyte Coda weapons and Temporal Archimedea.
- The 2024 rework collapsed enemy health types into Health, Armor and Shields; old elemental cheat sheets are wrong.
- Companions cannot die, need no upkeep, and have Bond mods that buff you back.
- Overguard: an unstrippable layer on some enemies and some frames that ignores crowd control.
- Steel Path unlocks after the star chart through The New War, not after the newest planets.
Current main quest order
- Awakening and Vor's Prize, then The Teacher (the modding tutorial added in 2025).
- Once Awake, Vox Solaris, The Archwing, Heart of Deimos in whatever order the arrows suggest.
- Natah and The Second Dream: the Operator.
- The War Within: Amps and the full Focus tree.
- Chains of Harrow, Apostasy Prologue, The Sacrifice: Excalibur Umbra.
- Rising Tide (Railjack), then the Prelude to War quests (Chimera Prologue, Erra, The Maker).
- The New War: the checkpoint everything else needs.
- Angels of the Zariman and Veilbreaker, either order.
- The Duviri Paradox: the Circuit and Incarnons, and required for The Hex.
- Whispers in the Walls, then The Lotus Eaters, then The Hex: Hollvania and 1999.
- The Old Peace, Jade Shadows and Jade Shadows: Constellations after that.
Frames added while you were away
Every one of these has a page with abilities, builds and where to farm it.
Your first week back
- Log in daily and clear the Nightwave backlog before the Acts expire.
- Open the Codex, resume the quest chain, and follow the recommended arrow.
- Run The Teacher if you have never seen it; the mod screen changed.
- Push to The New War as the first milestone.
- Do The Duviri Paradox next and start banking weekly Circuit rewards.
- Do Veilbreaker for the Helminth shard segment and start Archon Hunts on Mondays.
- Re-mod your companion; Stasis and feeding are gone and it has a weapon slot.
- Finish Whispers in the Walls, The Lotus Eaters and The Hex for 1999.
- Check Steel Path; it unlocks far earlier than old guides say.
- Read the weekly checklist and pick the three resets you will actually do.
Old advice that is now wrong
- Avoiding self-damage weapons: self-damage was replaced by a stagger in 2020.
- Maiming Strike on every melee: nerfed years ago.
- Arcane Distillers for slots: arcanes install like mods now.
- Stasis for Kubrows and Kavats: gone, along with DNA decay.
- The 13 enemy health types: collapsed to three in 2024.
- Sorties as the endgame: Archon Hunts, Netracells and Archimedea replaced them.
- Duviri as skippable side content: it is required for The Hex and the only way into the Circuit.
Tips that save runs
- Your old weapons still work; your old builds do not. Check the weapon hub before re-Forma-ing.
- The Incarnon page tells you which of your dusty MR-fodder guns is now meta.
- Do the weekly resets on Monday: Archon Hunt, Netracells, Circuit. That is the modern loop.
- The Teacher gives you Serration, Hornet Strike and Pressure Point again if you sold them years ago.
Mistakes that waste runs
- Rebuilding a 2019 loadout from memory.
- Skipping Duviri because it looks like a side mode.
- Farming Sorties for Rivens when Archon Hunts pay them weekly.
- Trying to unlock Steel Path the old way, clearing every new planet first.
