Weapon Upgrades Explained (2026): Catalyst, Forma, Adapters
Everything you can install on a Warframe weapon, in the order to do it.
Last Updated on September 20, 2026
The short version
Do them in this order. An Orokin Catalyst doubles the mod capacity. Forma reshapes slots so expensive mods fit. The Exilus adapter opens a utility slot. An Arcane adapter opens a slot for a weapon Arcane. Stop as soon as the weapon does its job.
Researched September 19, 2026, current through Update 43.5. Every mechanic here is confirmed by two sources (the official wiki, DE patch notes, the game files); numbers we could not confirm twice are left out, not guessed.
Table of Contents
Orokin Catalyst – doubles mod capacity
| Source | Form | Cost / Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market | Built | 20 Platinum | Instant, most reliable source |
| Nightwave Offerings | Built | 75 Cred | Only when the current season's cred offerings include it |
| Eris Junction | Built | Free (one-time) | First task completion reward |
| Acrithis's shop (1999) | Blueprint | 20 Pathos Clamps | Standing-like currency from The Hex bounties |
| Sorties | Blueprint | Random reward slot | Daily 3-mission rotation |
| Gift of the Lotus alerts | Blueprint | Random reward | Rotating limited-time alerts |
| Invasions | Blueprint | Rare battle-pay reward | Not a reliable farm, opportunistic only |
| Daily Tribute (login) | Blueprint | Random daily reward | Passive, no action required |
| Archon Hunts | Blueprint | Random reward | Weekly 3-mission rotation |
| Stolen Dreams (quest) | Blueprint | Guaranteed, one-time | Early-game quest reward |
| Steel Path Descendia | Blueprint | Infernum 21 clear | Endgame Steel Path content |
| 1999 Calendar | Built (occasional) | Free, calendar slot | Time-gated daily/weekly login calendar |
- A Catalyst permanently doubles a weapon's mod capacity (e.g. 30 becomes 60 at max rank), it is consumed on use, and it only works on that one weapon.
- Apply it to an unranked or partially-ranked weapon so the bonus capacity fills in as you level it; applying it to an already max-rank weapon still works but you get the extra capacity immediately with nothing to level into.
- Catalysts come in two forms: a fully-built item ready to slot in the Arsenal, or a Blueprint that must be crafted in the Foundry (25,000 Credits, 1 Morphic, 1 Gallium, 1 Control Module, 1 Orokin Cell, 23h build, rushable for 10 Platinum).
- Confirmed current sources (built items): Market for 20 Platinum; Nightwave Offerings for 75 Cred (offering availability rotates by season); Eris Junction first-task completion.
- Confirmed current sources (Blueprints needing crafting): Sorties (random reward), Gift of the Lotus alerts (random reward), rare Invasion battle-pay reward, some Tactical Alerts, Daily Tribute (Login reward, random), Archon Hunts (random reward), Acrithis's shop for 20 Pathos Clamps, occasional 1999 Calendar reward, and Steel Path Descendia Infernum 21 completion.
- The Stolen Dreams quest gives one guaranteed Catalyst Blueprint on completion – a reliable early source new players should not miss.
- Fomorian Sabotage and Razorback Armada are older rotating community-goal events that have historically handed out free Catalysts (and Reactors, the Warframe/Companion equivalent) – treat as periodic bonus sources, not a standing farm.
Forma and Polarities
| Forma type | What it does | Primary current source | Market price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forma (regular) | Sets a slot to any standard polarity (not Umbra) | Void Relics / Operational Supply / Market | 20p single, 35p for 3 |
| Umbra Forma | Sets a slot to Umbra polarity (reduces Umbral mod drain) | Steel Path Honors (150 Steel Essence) | Not sold for Platinum |
| Stance Forma | Sets a melee weapon's Stance slot to a universal-compatible polarity | Steel Path Honors (10 Steel Essence) | Not sold for Platinum |
| Omni Forma | Sets ANY slot to a universal polarity (not Umbra); replaced/absorbed Aura Forma | Market / Temporal Archimedea / Arbitrations | 80p single, 150p for 3 |
- Polarizing a slot with Forma changes that slot's polarity (the shape icon) to match a mod's polarity, which cuts that mod's drain cost roughly in half – this is what lets a fully-formed weapon carry more or higher-rank mods than one that has never been Forma'd.
- Using Forma always resets the weapon's affinity (level) to rank 0, wiping installed mods' capacity usage back to nothing until you relevel it – budget a few missions or a Helminth-style affinity source to get back to max rank.
- A weapon can only be Forma'd once it is at max rank; you cannot polarize a slot on a weapon that hasn't been leveled to its current max.
- Regular Forma can set a slot to any of the eight standard mod polarities (Madurai/-, Vazarin/D, Naramon/-, Zenurik/-, Unairu/-, etc. – the game shows them as icon shapes, not element names to most players) but cannot apply the special Umbra polarity.
- Umbra Forma applies the Umbra polarity specifically, which reduces drain for Umbra mods (currently Umbral Vitality, Umbral Fiber, Umbral Intensify) on Warframes and for a small set of Umbra-polarized melee mods; it is untradeable and only obtainable from Steel Path Honors (150 Steel Essence, rotates on an ~8-week cycle), Mastery Rank 30 test completion (grants 3x), Operation Plague Star reruns (20,000 Standing at Nakak), or periodic Twitch Drops/DevStream giveaways. It is not sold for Platinum.
- Stance Forma applies a universal-compatible polarity specifically to a melee weapon's Stance slot; current source is Steel Path Honors for 10 Steel Essence (plus historical, no-longer-active Operation rewards).
- Omni Forma (added in the Techrot Encore update, March 2025) applies a universal polarity to ANY single mod slot except Umbra – it is the most flexible Forma type. It is the successor to the old 'Aura Forma': DE converted every existing Aura Forma into Omni Forma and broadened what it can polarize, rather than leaving Aura Forma as a separate, narrower item. Aura Forma is no longer obtainable as a distinct item as of Update 38.5.
Exilus Weapon Adapter
| Source | Form | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Market | Built | 20 Platinum |
| Any Faction Syndicate | Blueprint | 75,000 Standing |
| Requiem Relics | Blueprint | Relic drop (rate varies by relic) |
| Acrithis's shop | Built (sometimes) | 20 Pathos Clamps |
| 1999 Calendar | Built (occasional) | Free, calendar slot |
- Installing an Exilus Weapon Adapter opens a dedicated Exilus slot on a weapon that only accepts Exilus (utility) mods – stat-boosting or quality-of-life mods like Rush-style handling mods that normally would not be worth their capacity cost in a regular slot.
- Exilus mods for weapons are regular mods flagged as utility-type (things like magazine/reload or handling mods); they are not a separately named mod category the game highlights, which is a common source of confusion versus Warframe Exilus mods (which ARE a visually distinct, separate category).
- Confirmed current sources: purchase complete from the Market for 20 Platinum (Equipment -> Components); Blueprint from any Faction Syndicate (Steel Meridian, Arbiters of Hexis, etc.) for 75,000 Standing; Blueprint drop from Requiem Relics; sometimes a complete item from the 1999 Calendar; sometimes complete from Acrithis's shop for 20 Pathos Clamps.
- Blueprint crafting cost: 25,000 Credits, 1 Forma, 1 Exceptional Sentient Core, 1 Orokin Cell, 23h build (10 Platinum to rush).
Arcane Adapters – Primary / Secondary / Melee
| Adapter | Unlocks | Steel Essence cost | Other sources | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary Arcane Adapter | Primary Arcane slot | 15 Steel Essence (Teshin) | 25 Pathos Clamps (Acrithis); 20p (Market) | The Steel Path unlocked (for Market option) |
| Secondary Arcane Adapter | Secondary Arcane slot | 15 Steel Essence (Teshin) | 25 Pathos Clamps (Acrithis); 20p (Market) | The Steel Path unlocked (for Market option) |
| Melee Arcane Adapter | Melee Arcane slot | Not sold by Teshin | 50,000 Standing (Cavia); 20p (Market); Netracell/Deep Archimedea drops | Whispers in the Walls quest + Melee Upgrade Segment installed |
- An Arcane Adapter fuses onto a weapon (Arsenal, Upgrade screen) to unlock one Arcane slot on that weapon, which can then hold a single Weapon Arcane of the matching type (Primary Arcane Adapter -> Primary Arcane slot, etc.).
- Primary and Secondary Arcane Adapters are functionally identical in acquisition and are NOT time- or quest-gated the way the Melee version is.
- Primary/Secondary Arcane Adapter sources: Teshin's Steel Path Honors for 15 Steel Essence each; Acrithis's shop for 25 Pathos Clamps; Market for 20 Platinum (requires The Steel Path unlocked first); occasional 1999 Calendar or Descendia reward.
- The Melee Arcane Adapter has extra prerequisites: it requires having completed the 'Whispers in the Walls' quest and installed the Melee Upgrade Segment (the in-game system that adds a melee Arcane slot at all) before it can be used.
- Melee Arcane Adapter sources: Cavia Syndicate (Bird 3 vendor) for 50,000 Standing at Rank 3 (Colleague); Market for 20 Platinum (still requires Whispers in the Walls completed); Netracell mission drops (Testudo/Deimos-style rotations); Deep Archimedea mission drops (requires Rank 5 'Illuminate' with Cavia for the higher-rate rotation); occasional 1999 Calendar or Descendia reward.
- Steel Essence is earned by killing enemies while on The Steel Path (the harder difficulty variant of the Star Chart), so Primary/Secondary Arcane Adapters are effectively gated behind unlocking Steel Path, even though the Market Platinum option exists as a shortcut once Steel Path is unlocked.
Weapon Arcanes
| Family | Slot type | Trigger | Primary source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merciless (Primary/Secondary) | Primary/Secondary Arcane | On Kill | Steel Path Acolyte drop |
| Deadhead (Primary/Secondary) | Primary/Secondary Arcane | On Headshot Kill | Steel Path Acolyte drop |
| Dexterity (Primary/Secondary) | Primary/Secondary Arcane | On Melee Kill | Steel Path Acolyte drop |
| Cascadia Flare/Overcharge/Accuracy/Empowered | Secondary/Warframe Arcane | Status/Roll/Overshield dependent | Cavalero (Zariman) – 5,000-7,500 Standing; Zariman Thrax/Void Angel drop |
| Fractalized Reset | Primary Arcane | On Ability Cast | Cavalero (Zariman) – 5,000 Standing; Zariman Thrax/Void Angel drop |
- A Weapon Arcane is a conditional passive: it has a percent chance to trigger on a specific event (a kill, a headshot kill, a melee kill, a roll, a status proc) and grants a temporary, stacking buff. It only works once the matching Arcane Adapter is installed and the Arcane is slotted in.
- Arcanes rank up by feeding the game duplicate unranked copies of the same Arcane; each rank needs progressively more duplicates than the last (a cumulative total of 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21 duplicates for ranks 1 through 6 depending on the Arcane's max rank tier), and higher rank increases the trigger chance and/or magnitude, not just magnitude.
- Primary Merciless / Deadhead / Dexterity and their Secondary equivalents are the classic 'starter' weapon arcane set, earned as guaranteed drops from defeating Acolytes during Steel Path missions – one random arcane from that family per Acolytes kill.
- Merciless: On Kill, temporary stacking Weapon Damage buff. Deadhead: On Headshot Kill, temporary stacking Weapon Damage buff (Primary/Secondary only, higher single-stack value, fewer max stacks). Dexterity: On Melee Kill, temporary stacking Weapon Damage buff for the equipped gun – useful for hybrid melee/gunplay builds.
- The Cascadia family (Cascadia Flare, Overcharge, Accuracy, Empowered) are Secondary/Warframe arcanes tied to the Zariman Ten Zero: purchasable from Cavalero (The Holdfasts syndicate vendor on the Zariman) at ranks Fallen through Guardian for 5,000-7,500 Standing each, and also drop from Thrax Centurion, Thrax Legatus, and Void Angel enemies on the Zariman.
- Fractalized Reset (Primary: On Ability Cast, temporary heavy Reload Speed buff) is also a Cavalero/Zariman item – 5,000 Standing at Rank 1 (Fallen), or a Thrax/Void Angel drop.
- Beyond the families the owner asked about, there are dozens of other weapon-arcane families tied to specific content: Primary Blight/Exhilarate/Obstruct (Duviri), Primary Frostbite (Conjunction Survival), Secondary Outburst/Shiver (Duviri), Secondary Encumber/Kinship (Necralisk Mirror Defense), Conjunction Voltage and Akimbo Slip Shot (Conjunction Survival/Duviri), the Cavia melee-arcane set (Melee Fortification, Retaliation, Afflictions, Animosity, Exposure, Influence, Vortex, Crescendo, Duplicate – bought from Cavia's Bird 3 vendor from 5,000-7,500 Standing at Scholar rank), and a Hollvania (1999) drop pool (Primary Crux, Secondary Enervate, Melee Doughty) at roughly 12.5% per source. New players do not need to chase all of these – Merciless/Deadhead/Dexterity from Steel Path Acolytes is the efficient default.
Rivens (out of scope)
- Riven Mods slot into a weapon's normal mod slots (not the Exilus or Arcane slot) and roll randomized, weapon-specific stats whose ranges shift with that weapon's 'disposition' – the site has a dedicated page covering disposition and how to read/reroll a Riven, so this explainer does not duplicate it.
Recommended order of investment
- 1) Level the weapon to max rank first with no upgrades installed – Forma and Catalyst are both wasted value if applied before you know the weapon is a keeper.
- 2) Install an Orokin Catalyst and relevel to max rank – this doubles your mod capacity budget before you spend anything else, so every later upgrade (Forma, Arcane) has more room to matter.
- 3) Forma the slots to match your intended mod polarities, releveling after each application – do this only after you know your build (crit vs status, which set mods you want) since Forma commits a slot's shape.
- 4) Add the Exilus Weapon Adapter once the base build is solid – it is cheap (20p or a Syndicate grind) and gives a 'free' extra mod slot that does not cost you anything from the main capacity pool.
- 5) Add the matching Arcane Adapter and a ranked Weapon Arcane last – Arcanes are the most expensive step in Steel Essence/Standing and give a smaller, conditional payoff, so they are the finishing touch on a weapon you have already committed to.
- This order front-loads the free-est, highest-impact steps (Catalyst, Forma) and back-loads the most expensive/grindiest step (Arcanes), which matches how most guides and the community treat weapon investment priority.
Total cost to fully upgrade one weapon (estimate)
- Buying every component with Platinum where possible: Catalyst 20p + Exilus Weapon Adapter 20p + one Arcane Adapter 20p (Primary/Secondary; requires Steel Path) + Forma at 20p each. A typical 'fully formed' weapon uses 5-8 Forma depending on how many polarities you want to match; at 3-for-35p bundles that is roughly 60-95 Platinum in Forma alone.
- Rough Platinum-only total for a Primary or Secondary weapon: about 120-155 Platinum for Catalyst + Exilus Adapter + Arcane Adapter + 6 Forma (via 2x 3-packs), NOT counting the Arcane items themselves (which are typically Standing/Steel-Essence-gated rather than Platinum-priced) or maxing that Arcane's rank (which needs multiple duplicate copies, each itself a farmed or Vosfor-purchased item).
- The free-to-play equivalent trades Platinum for Steel Essence (150 for Umbra/Stance Forma types are not usually needed on a generic weapon), Standing (75,000 for the Exilus Adapter via Syndicate, 15 Steel Essence for an Arcane Adapter), Void Relic farming for Forma, and Steel Path Acolyte hunting for the Arcane itself and its duplicates to rank it up – this is the more common path since none of these items are tradeable between players.
- Melee weapons add one more mandatory step versus guns: the Melee Arcane Adapter needs Whispers in the Walls completed first, which is a quest gate rather than a pure grind/Platinum gate.
What to do, in order
- Level the weapon to rank 30 (max) with a basic mod loadout before spending anything permanent on it.
- Buy or farm an Orokin Catalyst, install it, and relevel to max rank again.
- Decide your build (crit, status, or a hybrid) and Forma the slots to match, releveling after each Forma.
- Get the Exilus Weapon Adapter (Market Platinum is the fastest route) and slot a utility mod like a reload or handling mod.
- Once you've unlocked The Steel Path, farm Acolytes for Merciless/Deadhead/Dexterity Arcanes, buy the matching Arcane Adapter from Teshin, and slot your best-ranked Arcane.
- Treat Rivens as a separate, later-game step – see this site's dedicated Riven page.
What players get wrong
| What people think | What is true |
|---|---|
| A Catalyst/Reactor and Forma do the same thing. | A Catalyst doubles total mod capacity once; Forma reshapes individual slot polarities to cut specific mods' drain and can be applied repeatedly. They stack and solve different problems. |
| You should Forma a weapon the moment you get it. | Forma resets the weapon to rank 0 and commits a slot's polarity. Level to max rank first and settle on a build before spending Forma, or you waste the relevel time and may pick the wrong polarity. |
| Exilus mods for weapons are a special glowing mod category like Warframe Exilus mods. | Weapon Exilus mods are ordinary utility-flagged mods (handling, reload, etc.) that only become worth using once you have the dedicated Exilus slot from the Adapter – there is no separate visual mod category for them the way there is on Warframes. |
| Aura Forma is still a separate item you can farm. | As of Update 38.5 (Techrot Encore, March 2025), Aura Forma was converted into Omni Forma and broadened to polarize any slot except Umbra. Aura Forma is no longer a distinct obtainable item. |
| Any Arcane Adapter can be bought straightforwardly with just Platinum from the start. | The Market Platinum option for Primary/Secondary Arcane Adapters requires The Steel Path to be unlocked first, and the Melee Arcane Adapter additionally requires completing the Whispers in the Walls quest and installing the Melee Upgrade Segment – Platinum does not skip those prerequisites. |
| A weapon Arcane works as soon as you drop it in your inventory. | Arcanes only function once the matching Arcane Adapter has been fused to that specific weapon to open the Arcane slot; owning the Arcane item alone does nothing. |
| Umbra Forma can be used to polarize any slot, like Omni Forma. | Umbra Forma only applies the Umbra polarity (for Umbra mods) to Warframes and melee weapons, and cannot be used on a Warframe's Exilus or Aura slot. Omni Forma is the flexible one; Umbra Forma is narrow and specific. |
| Ranking up an Arcane just requires time or credits, like leveling a mod. | Arcanes rank up only by feeding the game duplicate unranked copies of that exact same Arcane – each rank costs more duplicates than the last, so ranking one up means farming or buying multiple copies of the same drop. |
Glossary
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Mod capacity / Drain | The point budget a weapon has for installed mods; a Catalyst doubles the total, and matching a mod's polarity to its slot roughly halves that mod's individual cost. |
| Polarity | The shape/icon assigned to a mod slot (and to a mod itself). Matching mod polarity to slot polarity reduces the mod's drain cost. |
| Polarizing | Using a Forma on a slot to change its polarity; always resets the item's affinity/rank to 0. |
| Steel Essence | Currency earned by killing enemies while playing on The Steel Path; spent with Teshin for Forma variants and Arcane Adapters. |
| Pathos Clamps | A 1999/Hex-content currency from Acrithis's shop that can substitute for several Steel Essence purchases, including Catalysts, Reactors, and Arcane Adapters. |
| Vosfor | Currency earned from Void Angel-related content, spent on dissolving/purchasing many of the newer Arcane families (Cascadia, melee Cavia set, etc.). |
| Acolyte | A rare, tough roaming enemy that spawns on Steel Path missions and guarantees a Merciless/Deadhead/Dexterity family Arcane drop on death. |
| Arcane slot | A dedicated slot separate from normal mod slots, opened by an Arcane Adapter, that holds exactly one Weapon Arcane. |
