Digital Extremes, the brains behind Warframe, are warming up to their next release—Soulframe. The award-winning Canadian studio made the surprise reveal during this year’s TeennoCon event.
The development of the new game came into the limelight two months ago when Digital Extremes filed for Soulframe’s Trademark. Before that, a small team of developers has been working on the concepts of the game since 2019. The first playable version of the game will be released within a year.
However, Soulframe is already set on a path of success like its predecessor, Warframe. Aside from the two games sharing the same director and a few other veterans from Digital Extreme, Soulframe will also be a free-to-play game.
Soulframe is an action hybrid-MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). So, anticipate playing with tens of thousands or millions of other gamers while receiving a constant supply of fresh content. The game draws inspiration from popular films like Princes Mononoke and The NeverEnding Story. It focuses on the theme of nature, adventure, and restoration with a particular interest in the collision between humanity and nature.
The game’s setting is in a broad open world with an extensive network of caves below. And the narrative is that the world feels quite angry about what’s been done to it, and players who occupy it will feel its displeasure as the caves underneath keep moving throughout the day. What’s interesting is how the caves shift and how it has been included in the game’s storyline.
Another distinctive feature of the yet-to-be-released game is that it is focused on melee. While Warframe is extremely fast with crazy high speeds, Soulframe is slower and heavy. It is undoubtedly an immersive experience with deep exploration.
To get the mood Digital Extremes is attempting to convey, watch the NSFW teaser trailer of the game. It is available on youtube and lasts just under six minutes. The main character seems to have been imprisoned and abandoned by armored humanoids before being resurrected by a mystery animal and a small bird.
Currently, Soulframe has no preferred platforms. It’s unknown if it will be released on last-gen and new-gen consoles, but we’d anticipate it to launch similarly to Warframe, with a PC version followed by console ports. Given its release date is far away, PS4 and Xbox One versions could still be in the works.
Soulframe is still in its early stages, but the developing team has been transparent about the game’s production. To learn more about this fantasy title, visit its official website. Also, sign up for updates to keep up with the changes in the game.
