Athodai

Build and guide

Build it for the headshot-focused crit loop, Overdrive plus the Pain Points augment; skip it if you want a low-effort stat-stick. The one real weakness: a 24-round magazine that burns through in about two clips under the headshot playstyle it demands.

Unique trait: Overdrive

A weak-point kill with primary fire triggers Overdrive: +100% fire rate, +100% ammo efficiency, and -100% recoil for 8 seconds, but it locks out alt-fire and can’t be refreshed. The Pain Points augment adds +60% weak-point damage per hit, up to 10 stacks, so a clean headshot chain fires faster and hits harder at the same time.

Athodai is a Tenno hand-cannon with a long-range Heat and Puncture beam primary and a burst-cone alt-fire, and it still matters in 2026 because Overdrive and the Pain Points augment turn its 32% crit chance, 2x multiplier, and 8% status chance into a real headshot build.

How to get the Athodai

  1. Hit Mastery Rank 10, the weapon’s requirement, and make sure Railjack/Empyrean is unlocked through the normal quest chain.
  2. Run Railjack missions in Venus Proxima (nodes like Falling Glory, Bifrost Echo, Vesper Strait, Beacon Shield Ring, Orvin-Haarc) and look for the optional abandoned-derelict side objective.
  3. Rank up the Piloting Intrinsic to reveal hidden derelicts faster on the tactical map, then follow the derelict path to its terminal and hack it for a chance at the Athodai Blueprint, Barrel, Receiver, and Stock.
  4. Build each component and then the finished weapon in the Foundry; costs are standard credits and resources with normal build timers.
  5. For the Pain Points augment, check your current Nightwave series screen in-game for the rank that unlocks it since Nightwave series and rank requirements rotate over time.

All Athodai parts and the blueprint are tradeable, so buying them from other players skips the Railjack derelict RNG entirely, but a bought copy will not come with the free weapon slot and pre-installed Orokin Catalyst that the original 2020 TennoCon giveaway copy had.

Riven disposition sits at 1.05, a middling three-dot roll worth chasing for crit chance and crit damage, not for status since the 8% base doesn’t justify it.

Builds

This crit-focused Athodai build maximizes headshot-driven bursts by stacking Primed Pistol Gambit, Primed Target Cracker, Galvanized Crosshairs, and Hydraulic Crosshairs on top of Hornet Strike and Barrel Diffusion. Frostbite and Pathogen Rounds round it out with a Viral element to handle armor and shields.

ModWhy it’s here
Hornet StrikeCore flat damage mod every pistol build needs, the foundation crit and elemental multipliers scale from.
Barrel DiffusionAdds +220% Multishot so each semi-auto trigger pull rolls extra crit chances, doubling down on Athodai’s 32% base crit.
Primed Pistol GambitAdds +187% Critical Chance, pushing Athodai’s 32% base crit chance well past reliable orange-crit territory.
Primed Target CrackerAdds +110% Critical Damage, multiplying all those crits into much bigger hits on a crit-focused weapon like Athodai.
Galvanized CrosshairsGrants stacking Critical Chance while aiming on headshot and headshot kill, feeding directly into Athodai’s headshot-triggered full-auto mode.
Hydraulic CrosshairsAdds another Critical Chance boost while aiming after a headshot, layering with Galvanized Crosshairs during Athodai’s full-auto burst.
FrostbiteSupplies the Cold half of a Viral combo and its own Status Chance boost helps Athodai actually land procs despite its low 8% base status.
Pathogen RoundsSupplies the Toxin half of Viral alongside Frostbite, letting Athodai’s crit hits also strip armor and shred flesh targets.

Secondary Deadhead, which stacks headshot damage 3x and cuts recoil, is the top pick; Secondary Merciless is the cheaper alternative, stacking off any kill instead of requiring headshots.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • 32% crit chance is near the best-in-class for secondaries before any mods
  • Long-range beam primary fire has generous hitscan reach and doesn’t miss like a projectile pistol can
  • Overdrive passive turns clean headshot kills into a free fire-rate and ammo-efficiency window
  • Pain Points augment turns weak-point spam into serious stacking burst damage
  • Alt-fire gives a short-range panic button that dumps the whole mag into a damage cone

Cons

  • Flat 2x crit multiplier caps the damage ceiling well below top-tier crit secondaries
  • 24-round magazine drains fast, and alt-fire burns ammo even faster
  • 8% base status chance is close to unbuildable without heavy mod investment
  • No Incarnon adapter, so it can’t scale into Steel Path Circuit’s Incarnon power spikes

This weapon is for players who like headshot-focused crit pistols and don’t mind farming Pain Points and babysitting a 24-round magazine, not for anyone wanting reliable status or low-effort performance.
