Nataruk

Build it. It’s free, it lands with a weapon slot and a Catalyst already installed, and it’s still one of the best non-Incarnon primaries in the game as of September 2026. The only real weakness is the draw time. That’s a tradeoff you live with, not a flaw you mod away.

Unique trait: Perfect Shot

Release between 70% and full charge, when the reticle flashes, for 60% crit chance at 2.4x plus infinite punch-through on an oversized arrow. And it never consumes ammo.

Nataruk is the compound bow Teshin hands you during The New War. No build. No blueprint. No trip to a syndicate vendor. It’s just yours once the quest ends, and it shows up swinging: no ammo to manage, ever, and one charge mechanic that turns it into one of the hardest-hitting primaries you’ll own.

That mechanic is called Perfect Shot. Draw the string past 70% of a full charge and you’ll see it happen: the reticle’s brackets turn white and the crosshair goes yellow. That’s your window. Release inside it and you get a Perfect Shot instead of a regular Charged Shot: 60% crit chance at a 2.4x multiplier, against 50% and 2.2x for a shot released at full charge outside that window, and just 20% and 1.8x for an uncharged Quick Shot. Charged and Perfect arrows also carry a noticeably bigger hitbox with infinite punch-through, so a good release doesn’t stop at the first target. It keeps going through whatever’s lined up behind it.

That mix of free acquisition, real burst damage, and zero ammo economy is why Nataruk still gets recommended in September 2026, three-plus years after most players first unlocked it. It doesn’t have an Incarnon Genesis form, so it’s not the single best primary in the game anymore. It’s the best one that costs you nothing.

How to get the Nataruk

You don’t build this one. Complete The New War and Nataruk lands in your inventory automatically, no crafting, no blueprint, no relic. It arrives with its own free weapon slot and an Orokin Catalyst already installed, so you’re not spending platinum or endo to get it near max potential. That’s rare. Most S-tier primaries cost you a slot, a Catalyst, and usually some plat on top of both.

This weapon carries no Mastery Rank requirement. MR 0 is fine. In practice you won’t see it before roughly MR 5, since that’s about the level of story progress it takes to reach and finish The New War in the first place.

You can’t trade Nataruk. Not to another player, not for platinum, not ever. What you can do is buy a second copy straight from Cephalon Simaris for 100,000 standing, his reputation currency, not plat. That’s a real grind, closer to weeks of dedicated Sanctuary Onslaught and scanning than an afternoon project, and most players never bother. One free copy covers every build you’d realistically want to run.

The crit numbers are the whole story here, especially once Perfect Shot pushes chance to 60% and the multiplier to 2.4x. Riven disposition sits at 0.65, one of the lowest in the game, so don’t burn plat chasing a god-roll riven for it. Everything that makes this weapon good is already baked into the base stats and the charge mechanic. Save the riven slot for something else.

Builds

The build that keeps showing up across 2026 guides leans on crit stacking and Hunter Munitions instead of raw elemental damage. Hunter Munitions turns a chunk of your slash damage into a guaranteed slash proc on crit. Slash procs cut straight through armor. That matters once you’re fighting Steel Path Grineer with damage-reduction plates stacked on top of health. Push crit chance and crit damage hard enough and Perfect Shot’s 60% chance at a 2.4x multiplier starts landing a slash proc on nearly every headshot, while the infinite punch-through clears whatever’s lined up behind your target. Short on forma? A Viral and Heat status build (Malignant Force, Rime Rounds, Thermite Rounds) trades some of that crit ceiling for armor strip and status coverage on a cheaper loadout.

ModWhy it’s here
SerrationFlat damage. Never leaves a rifle or bow build, this one included.
Galvanized ChamberMultishot that stacks on kills. The workhorse of every modern rifle build.
Critical DelayCrit chance for a reload and zoom penalty you’ll barely notice on a weapon you’re already charging.
Vital SenseCrit damage, doubling down on what Perfect Shot already does at 2.4x.
Hunter MunitionsTurns crits into guaranteed slash procs. Slash procs skip armor entirely.
Heavy CaliberBig flat damage for an accuracy hit that barely matters when you’re aiming a charged arrow anyway.
Galvanized AptitudeStatus chance, plus bonus damage per status already on the target.
Primed ShredMore punch-through and fire rate, stretching an already huge Perfect Shot hitbox even further.

For the arcane slot, Longbow Sharpshot is the pick two separate 2026 guides land on independently: land a headshot and your next shot gets +300% damage, which stacks nastily with Perfect Shot’s crit numbers. Don’t have it yet? Primary Merciless works off stacking per-kill damage instead, and Primary Deadhead adds +360% headshot damage, called out as the crucial piece in some of the cheaper, no-forma builds.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Free at Mastery Rank 0, arriving with a weapon slot and a Catalyst already installed the moment you finish The New War.
  • Infinite reserve ammo. No ammo economy, ever, unlike most top-tier primaries that need Carrier or ammo mutation mods to keep firing.
  • Perfect Shot hits 60% crit chance at a 2.4x multiplier, and Steel Path builds report headshots running into the hundreds of thousands and beyond.
  • Charged and Perfect shots get infinite punch-through and an oversized hitbox, playing almost like a line-piercing AoE weapon instead of a single-target bow.
  • Still ranked S-tier as the best non-Incarnon primary across multiple 2026 tier lists, and it stays viable at max-level Steel Path when built right.

Cons

  • The draw time is slow and it feels clunky if you’re coming from hitscan or automatic weapons. Estimates put it anywhere from around 1 second to 1.86 seconds depending on the build.
  • Riven disposition is 0.65, one of the lowest in the game, so rivens are expensive to roll well and mostly not worth chasing.
  • No Incarnon Genesis form exists for it. At the very top of the meta it loses to Incarnon-evolved weapons like Incarnon Dread, which one tier list flat out calls “Nataruk on steroids.”
  • Community opinion is split. Some players call it one of the best weapons in the game, others call it “meh” next to something like Kuva Bramma, and modding for a faster fire rate to fix the clunky charge just tanks its damage instead.

Nataruk is the easiest recommendation on this list. Finished The New War? You already own an S-tier primary with nothing left to invest. No reason to leave it sitting unused in your loadout screen. It won’t feel great if you hate charge weapons, and if that’s you, you’ll probably lean on something automatic once alternatives open up. Everyone else: build it, skip the riven, and let Perfect Shot carry the mission.
