Build it. Epitaph is a cheap, fast secondary that does two jobs most guns need a whole separate weapon for: it primes packs of enemies with guaranteed Blast and Cold procs on an uncharged shot, then bleeds down or one-shots a single tough target on a charged shot. Getting there takes a Sevagoth farm and Mastery Rank 8. Once you have the parts, the build itself is cheap.
Tap the trigger and Epitaph lobs a slow explosive slab that deals mixed Impact, Puncture, and Slash on a direct hit, then guarantees Blast and Cold procs to everything within 8 meters when it detonates. Hold it for roughly 0.36 seconds instead, and you get a fast, mostly-Slash projectile with very high critical chance, 2 meters of punch-through, and a guaranteed Impact proc on a direct hit.
Epitaph is Sevagoth’s signature secondary, and it earns its spot on mechanics as much as numbers. Most secondaries do one job. This one splits into two: an area status gun on the tap-fire, a single-target crit weapon on the charged fire, no swapping required.
That split is why it’s still sitting in S-tier on September 2026 secondary rankings, usually named right next to Kuva Nukor as one of the two secondaries worth building specifically to prime groups for the rest of your kit. Here’s a current build for it in action.
How to get the Epitaph
You need Mastery Rank 8, and the chain to actually build Epitaph starts before you ever see the blueprint. Complete the Call of the Tempestarii quest first. That quest is what unlocks Sevagoth’s Shadow and opens up farming Sevagoth himself, and Epitaph’s parts come from the same content that quest gates you into.
The Blueprint, Barrel, and Receiver drop from Void Storm missions, the Railjack Void Fissure content, on Earth, Venus, and Saturn Proxima. Each piece sits around a 10% drop chance per mission. Farming a full set solo is a real grind. Every piece is tradeable though, so buying what you’re missing from other players is a legitimate shortcut if you’d rather not run Void Storms on repeat.
Once you’ve got all three, building Epitaph costs 20,000 Credits and 7 Orokin Cells. That’s the whole build cost. No Forma requirement to get a working weapon out of the foundry.
Epitaph Prime is the statistically better version, and what most 2026 build guides actually assume you’re running. It needs Mastery Rank 14, and it’s currently vaulted, so its relics aren’t in the regular drop tables. Trading, existing relic stock, or a future Prime Resurgence rotation are your options. Riven disposition sits at 0.60x on base Epitaph and 0.55x on the Prime, among the lower disposition tiers in the game right now. A Riven won’t roll the big swings here that it would on an underused weapon. Save the kuva and run a normal mod set instead.
Builds
The build below is the charged-shot setup, sometimes called the boss-killer build. It leans on the charged shot’s high crit chance and converts a chunk of its Impact procs into Slash bleed, which is what actually kills tanky single targets like Acolytes and Archons. Lethal Torrent and Creeping Bullseye are doing specific work here, not just filling slots, and it usually takes three Forma to fit everything without wrecking your other stats. Rather skip that investment? A lighter status-primer loadout works fine with zero Forma, leaning on the uncharged shot instead of the charged one.

Secondary Deadhead is the arcane most guides settle on for this build. It adds bonus critical chance to your first shot after aiming, which lines up with how you’re actually firing charged shots anyway. Running Epitaph as a pure status primer instead calls for a different loadout built around the uncharged tap-fire, and Cascadia Flare, bonus Heat status chance and damage on hit, is the more common arcane pick for that version.

Cons
- Both fire modes have real projectile travel time, and the uncharged slab also drops over distance, so it gets awkward past midrange
- The explosion has only a 1x headshot multiplier and can’t trigger headshot bonuses; it also staggers you if you’re standing too close when it detonates
- Riven disposition is low, 0.60x on base Epitaph and 0.55x on Prime, so a Riven here is a poor use of kuva compared to other top secondaries
- Epitaph Prime, the version most current guides build around, is vaulted, so new players are stuck trading for it, burning existing relic stock, or waiting on Prime Resurgence
Epitaph fits players who already have a secondary they like for raw damage and want one that also handles crowd control on its own. It’s not a great first-secondary pick for a brand-new account, mostly because Mastery Rank 8 and the Sevagoth farm put it out of reach early anyway.
Already got Sevagoth built? That’s one more reason to run this specific weapon: Sevagoth Prime grants Epitaph and Epitaph Prime +20% headshot damage when you’re playing him. Outside that pairing, it still stands on its own as a strong secondary. No frame requirement to make it work.
