Warframe OBS Streaming and Recording Settings (2026): Encoder, Capture Mode and Frame Cap
Last Updated on September 30, 2026
Use a hardware encoder (NVENC, AMD AMF or Intel Quick Sync) instead of x264, capture with Game Capture, and cap Max Framerate so the GPU is not pinned. If frames still drop, run OBS as administrator and close the overlays Digital Extremes lists as conflicts.
Reviewed September 29, 2026, against the current Settings menu (Update 44) and the official support articles; this page is re-checked after every major patch.
| Setting | Set it to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| OBS encoder | A hardware encoder: NVENC, AMD AMF or Quick Sync | Takes the encoding work off the CPU |
| x264 | Only when no hardware encoder is available | It is the software encoder, so it runs on the CPU |
| OBS source | Game Capture | OBS calls it the most efficient way to add a game |
| If Game Capture fails | Window Capture or Display Capture | OBS points to these for games where Game Capture does not work |
| Warframe Max Framerate | Your monitor’s refresh rate | A game running flat out can max the GPU and starve OBS |
| OBS launch mode | Run as administrator, when the GPU is maxed | OBS can ask Windows to reserve some GPU capacity |
| Overlays | Close Rivatuner Statistics Server, MSI Afterburner OSD, Razer Synapse and Chroma SDK | They are on the list DE names as conflicts |

Set it up in this order
- In OBS, open Settings, then Output, and pick the hardware encoder that matches your GPU.
- Add a Game Capture source and select the Warframe window.
- In Warframe, Options, Display: set Max Framerate to your monitor's refresh rate.
- Close Rivatuner, MSI Afterburner OSD, Razer Synapse and Chroma, Raptr, GeDoSaTo, Lucid VirtuWatt and Baidu IME if they are running.
- Close OBS, then right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Open the OBS Stats dock and play a busy mission. Watch missed and skipped frames.
- If the GPU is still maxed, lower Warframe's graphics settings a step at a time.
When the CPU is the problem
If the GPU is idling and the frame time still spikes when a room fills, the CPU is the limit. CPUCores (our own tool, sold on Steam) moves Windows and background processes off the cores the game is using; it helps most on 4 and 6 core CPUs with a lot running in the background, and it does nothing for a GPU or network bottleneck.
CPUCores: Maximize Your FPS
If you’ve worked through the settings above and still get stutter, the bottleneck is often background processes stealing CPU time from the game. CPUCores isolates Windows and background tasks onto separate cores so your game gets the rest. It launches straight from Steam and detects your library automatically.
Tips that save runs
- Missed frames due to rendering lag point at an overloaded GPU. Skipped frames due to encoding lag point at the encoder.
- NVENC, AMF and Quick Sync encode on the graphics chip, not on the CPU cores the game is using. With an NVIDIA or AMD card, use that card's encoder rather than Quick Sync.
- OBS lists Rivatuner and MSI Afterburner as especially common conflicts, the same two names DE gives.
Mistakes that waste runs
- Leaving x264 on while the CPU is already busy running the game.
- Using Display Capture as the first choice. Game Capture is the efficient one.
- Playing with Max Framerate on No Limit while OBS composites on the same GPU.
