Warframe FPS Drops in Big Fights (2026): Steel Path, Survival, Squads and Relays
Last Updated on September 30, 2026
Crowded fights are often a CPU problem, so lowering shadows or resolution changes little. Three options do target the crowd: Particle System Quality, GPU Particles and Reduce Teammate Visual Effects. Use DirectX 12 on a modern multi-core CPU, cap Max Framerate, and keep the game updated.
Reviewed September 29, 2026, against the current Settings menu (Update 44) and the official support articles; this page is re-checked after every major patch.
| Scene | Why it is heavy | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Path and long Survival | Many enemies plus ability and weapon effects at once; DE has fixed CPU spikes from killing large groups | Particle System Quality Medium, GPU Particles Medium |
| Four-player relic runs and squads | Every squad member’s abilities and weapon effects draw on your screen | Reduce Teammate Visual Effects On (Options, Accessibility) |
| Defense and Stage Defense | DE noted Stage Defense performance work in Update 39 | The same settings; keep the game and drivers current |
| Open worlds | Streaming and shaders; DE has fixed DirectX 12 hitching and VRAM use here | Leave launcher Shader Cache on and let the cache warm up |
| Relays | Many other players in view; DE shipped Relay performance work in Update 42 | Cap Max Framerate; try DirectX 12 |
| Any of these on a CPU-limited PC | FPS barely moves when you lower graphics | Check GPU usage in Task Manager; see the high CPU page |

What to change, in order
- Options, Display: turn Show FPS on. Open Task Manager on a second screen: if the GPU sits well under full while frames drop in a fight, it is the CPU.
- Options, Accessibility: turn Reduce Teammate Visual Effects on. It cuts teammate ability and some weapon effects.
- Options, Display, Graphics: set Particle System Quality to Medium. It controls how many particles abilities and other effects spawn.
- Options, Display, Graphics: set GPU Particles to Medium. The choices run Disabled, Low, Medium, High, Ludicrous.
- Launcher gear icon: try DirectX 12 on a modern multi-core CPU. If it hitches, switch back to DirectX 11.
- Options, Display: Vertical Sync Off and Max Framerate at your refresh rate.
- Close Rivatuner Statistics Server, MSI Afterburner OSD, and Razer Synapse and Chroma.
- Update Warframe and the GPU driver. DE's hotfix notes list ability and enemy performance fixes almost every week.
When the CPU is the problem
If the GPU is idling and the frame time still spikes when a room fills, the CPU is the limit. CPUCores (our own tool, sold on Steam) moves Windows and background processes off the cores the game is using; it helps most on 4 and 6 core CPUs with a lot running in the background, and it does nothing for a GPU or network bottleneck.
CPUCores: Maximize Your FPS
If you’ve worked through the settings above and still get stutter, the bottleneck is often background processes stealing CPU time from the game. CPUCores isolates Windows and background tasks onto separate cores so your game gets the rest. It launches straight from Steam and detects your library automatically.
Tips that save runs
- Particle System Quality Low can hide effects. DE noted Sirius' Light Sanctuary was invisible at Low in Update 43.5, so Medium is the safer floor.
- Visual Effects Intensity is a look setting. DE's wiki describes it as brightness and contrast for effects; Reduce Teammate Visual Effects is the one aimed at other players.
- Test in the same mission each time and note the FPS at the worst moment.
Mistakes that waste runs
- Lowering Shadow Quality and resolution to fix a CPU-limited crowd. If FPS does not move on Low, graphics were not the limit.
- Expecting Reduce Teammate Visual Effects to catch every effect. Some abilities still ignore it, and DE has patched them one by one.
- Skipping updates. DE fixes specific spikes in hotfixes, for example Vadarya Prime chain lightning in 39.1.2 and Banshee's Gaseous Quake in 44.0.2.
