Warframe DirectX 11 vs DirectX 12 (2026): Which One to Use and Why

DX12 for crowds on 6+ cores, DX11 for stutter and old CPUs; how to decide in ten minutes

Last Updated on September 14, 2026

The short answer

DirectX 12 is the launcher default and the better choice on a 6 core or newer CPU: lower CPU overhead when a room fills, and Borderless mode is already flip-model. Its cost is shader compilation stutter on the first visit to each tileset, worse on open worlds. DirectX 11 is the answer when you get those hitches or run an older 4 core CPU. Switching is a launcher setting and a restart.

Decide in ten minutes

  1. Launcher gear icon: note which DirectX you are on. Play one Survival to ten minutes with Show FPS on and note the lowest frame rate and any hitches.
  2. Switch to the other DirectX, restart, play the same node.
  3. Keep whichever gave the higher lows without hitches; if both hitch, the cause is not DirectX (see the stuttering page).
  4. On DirectX 12, a hitch on first entry to a tile is normal; a hitch every time is not.

CPUCores — Maximize Your FPS

If you’ve worked through the settings above and still get stutter, the bottleneck is often background processes stealing CPU time from the game. CPUCores isolates Windows and background tasks onto separate cores so your game gets the rest — it launches straight from Steam and detects your library automatically.

Tips that save runs

  • The Enhanced engine is the only renderer; DirectX is the one real graphics choice left in the launcher.
  • A driver update resets the DirectX 12 shader cache, so expect one stuttery session after each.

Mistakes that waste runs

  • Judging DirectX 12 on its first session, before the cache exists.
