10 ores and gems, the cutter to buy, and where veins cluster

The short answer
The Plains have 4 ores in red veins and 6 gems in blue veins. Buy the Sunpoint Plasma Drill from Smokefinger in Fortuna, or the Advanced Nosam Cutter from Old Man Suumbaat if you’re Cetus only: Sentirum and Nyth need one of those two. The densest veins are in Er-Phryah’s Vigil and the Twin Horns cave.

The mining run
- Buy a cutter (table below) and equip it from the Gear wheel.
- Walk the rocks and caves. The HUD counts deposits in range, the rangefinder shows the nearest one, and the ticking speeds up as you close in.
- Aim at a blue heat spot on a vein, zoom, and hold fire.
- Release when the ring sits inside the bracket. Hit the small bracket for an extra gem, even on a red vein.
- Finish every heat spot on the vein. Stopping early locks that spot and cuts the yield.
- Turn spare gems in at Old Man Suumbaat, then refine the rest in the Foundry.

Where the veins cluster
- Er-Phryah's Vigil: the bay west and slightly north of the Cetus gates, beside Grineer Base 2. Often 15 or more veins in a small area.
- Twin Horns cave: close to the Cetus gates. Watch for the Akkalak turrets at the far end.
- Rarer minerals spawn farther from Cetus.
- The Sentient bones scattered around the Plains aren't rocks and never carry veins.
Tips that save runs
- A drop chance booster or playing Steel Path makes more veins gems and fewer ore. Leave boosters off when you need ore.
- The Range Widget for the Sunpoint Plasma Drill stretches the beam from 9 to 14 metres. It costs 30,000 standing at Old Mate.
- You can only carry one mining tool. A Nosam Cutter and the Drill can't be equipped together.
Mistakes that waste runs
- Refining every gem. Raw gems turn in for standing (Azurite and Devar are 50 each). Refined ones don't.
- Firing the cutter with enemies nearby. It alerts them.
