Warframe Crashing, Freezing or Black Screen Fix (2026): The Official Steps in Order

DE's own fix list, in order, plus the software they name as conflicts

Last Updated on September 14, 2026

The short answer

Nine steps from Digital Extremes’ support page fix nearly every crash, and the first three do most of the work: Verify and Optimize the cache, update the GPU driver and Windows, and switch DirectX. After that it is antivirus exclusions and the overlay list. Send a ticket with your EE.log only after the list is done; support will ask for the list first.

1. Verify, then Optimize the download cacheLauncher, gear icon
2. Update the GPU driver (clean install) and WindowsNVIDIA, AMD or Intel; Windows Update
3. Switch DirectX 12 to 11 or backLauncher, gear icon

8. Free disk space and a disk checkBoth the system drive and the game drive
9. Reinstall on the system driveIf the game is on an external or second drive

The black screen and freeze cases

  1. Black screen at launch with sound: the window is on a disconnected display or the wrong refresh rate. Alt plus Enter, or delete the display settings in EE.cfg so the game rebuilds them.
  2. Freeze on the login screen: the launcher's Bulk Download or a proxy; untick "use automatic configuration script" and "proxy server" in Windows Internet Options.
  3. Crash when entering the Plains, Vallis or Duviri: usually VRAM; drop Texture Memory one step and turn off Volumetric Lighting.
  4. Crash when a squad member joins: overlays hooking the network layer; close Discord's overlay.
  5. Crash after a Windows update: reinstall the GPU driver clean, then Verify the cache.

CPUCores — Maximize Your FPS

If you’ve worked through the settings above and still get stutter, the bottleneck is often background processes stealing CPU time from the game. CPUCores isolates Windows and background tasks onto separate cores so your game gets the rest — it launches straight from Steam and detects your library automatically.

Tips that save runs

  • EE.log lives in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Warframe; support wants it attached, unedited.
  • Two crashes in the same tile is a cache problem; random crashes are drivers or overlays.

Mistakes that waste runs

  • Reinstalling the whole 75 GB game before running Verify, which repairs the same files in five minutes.
  • Excluding the folder but not the two executables; some antiviruses only honour file exclusions.
